What do I do when my car is damaged in an accident? Obviously you would want to get your car fixed,
to do that you are going to contact your insurance company or the insurance company for the car that hit you. Now that insurance company is going to want to send you to one of its own shops. My recommendation would be to take your car to a shop of your own choosing. Why is that? The shop the insurance company wants to send you to is in the direct repair program, the insurance company tells that shop we will send you X amount of business a month but you have to perform the repairs under our terms. It's possible the shop cannot fully repair your car under the terms the insurance company is dictating. What are my options? Your option under California law is to take it where you want to take it. My recommendation to you as someone who has been in an accident in a vehicle is to take your car to a shop that is not in the insurance program. What are the benefits of taking it to my shop? The benefits of choosing your own shop is simple, the benefit would be that shop is not bound by the terms the insurance company is dictating.
